IN NEED

In need of exercise? Put the kettle on and jog on the spot until it boils. My 350 jogging steps just now seemed a bit excessive for little more than a mugful of water. Unable to jog? Sit and tap your feet or clap your hands while the water boils.

In need of diversion? Look out for Alexander Beetle – one of Rabbit’s many friends and relations from Winnie-the-Pooh. Alexander, it seems, has relocated. His shiny black body on dainty legs scuttled out of the way of my boots on my daily walk yesterday. He may just come your way… If not, look for a butterfly, bumblebee or bird from your window – and marvel.

In need of sound? The dawn chorus is glorious at this time of year. Blackbirds and robins, not governed by human-set time, are cheerful songsters and, when in the fields, the song of a skylark is joyous. Or tune in to Classic FM for a dose of diverting music. Or just enjoy the lack of traffic noise.

In need of peace, hope and strength? Breathe deeply, commit yourself, your family, friends and neighbours to God, pause to worship him, then ponder and put into practise Paul’s words: Show a gentle attitude towards everyone. The Lord is coming soon. Don’t worry about anything, but in all your prayers ask God for what you need, always asking him with a thankful heart. And God’s peace, which is far beyond human understanding, will keep your hearts and minds safe in union with Christ Jesus… Fill your minds with those things that are good and that deserve praise: things that are true, noble, right, pure, lovely, and honourable… And the God who gives us peace will be with you. (Philippians 4 v 5-9)
